Gene Paul Scruggs

Gene Scruggs is a native of Akron, Ohio and a product of the Akron Public Schools. Gene attended Garfield High School (1945) and the University of Akron, class of 1952, where he excelled in athletics and is a member of the University of Akron’s Hall of Fame Class of 1980 in Track and Football.

Upon returning from the Navy in 1947 he was employed by the Akron Community Center and Urban League until becoming an employee of the Akron Public Schools in 1955.

Receiving his Master's Degree in Education from Akron U he served as the Director of Extended Services and played a role in the development of the NYC (Neighborhood Youth Corps Summer Jobs Program), a program that afforded many of our youth their first jobs.  After retiring in 1991, he was asked to return and oversee similar youth programs which ended in 2009.

Mr. Scruggs has received several awards, including being inducted into the 1997 Akron Softball Hall of Fame. In 2008, after 25 years of officiating High School Basketball, he was inducted into the Ohio High School Athletic Association for Basketball. In 2009 he was awarded the Bill Falor Service Award by Akron Dapper Dan Club, and the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame as a Basketball Official.
