The Programs:
Alchemy, Inc. offers a safe group environment for youth to focus on topics directly related to their stage of development. We emphasize behavior and the character traits necessary for young men to achieve their long-term goals. Our unique and innovative approach uses myth and fairy tales in group discussions of common mythological motifs such as sacrifice, trials, conflict resolution, decision-making, perseverance, humility, confidence and strength to promote an understanding of the developmental processes these young men need to emulate in their academic and social behavior.
In-School Youth Mentoring
With the approval from school administration, we provide in-school mentoring programs to elementary, middle and high school-aged urban youth.
Our support groups provide a safe space and are designed around the telling, discussion and interpretation of mythological stories and fairy tales accompanied by the soothing beat of a djembe drum. We teach the student how to view their life's story through the objective lens of mythology and fairy tales. Participants uncover the common mythological motifs such as sacrifice, trials, conflict resolution, decision-making, perseverance, humility, confidence, and strength.
Through these myths, students will discover common themes and basic patterns of development. The characters and their common experiences provide the students with interpretations designed to increase their critical thinking skills. Through these discussions our students begin to see the importance of these mythological characteristics and how they relate to their academic achievements, social development and lifelong success.
Retention of University Students
Our Retention of University Students group provides support for freshmen students. Through a myth we explore the character traits necessary to obtain a “treasure which keeps on giving.” Working through a particular myth allows the students to reflect and discuss issues pertinent to their present situations. Students understand the need for asking for assistance and utilizing resources, overcoming obstacles and balancing the demands of their academics and social development. Perhaps most importantly, they learn the importance of sacrificing today for the benefits of tomorrow. The program is most effective when keeping the cohesive group together from their freshmen-to-senior year (designed for four-to-five years).
Re-Entry Program for Adult Males
Our Re-Entry Program for Adult Males is designed for men who are in the process of re-entering society. This program is ideal for the use of myth as it allows the participants to view situations objectively. This groups focus on reflection and the exploration of personal transformations and life transitions, goal-setting, and the critical importance of self-forgiveness and recovering their hero within.
